Interpreting and Applying Job with John Currid

PTC’s postgraduate intensive unit for 2020 is ‘Interpreting and Applying Job’ (OT061-712/812/912). This will be taken by Rev Dr John Currid of Reformed Theological Seminary, Atlanta, Georgia.

John will take the lectures via video conference from the U.S.

Lectures will be on the weekday mornings, Tuesdays to Fridays, of 4-14 August (8.45am-12pm, AEST; not 10 August).

Unit content

1. Introduction to recent and current perspectives on Job
2. Wisdom literature: including the orthodox and speculative wisdom distinction
3. Israelite wisdom: Job compared with Proverbs and Ecclesiastes
4. ANE wisdom and the genre of Job: including reverse Canaanite cosmogonic myth, Babylonian birth incantation, Egyptian speculative wisdom
5. Themes: including creation, Satan, the body, righteousness, redemption
6. Theology: God’s character, justice, grace, sovereignty,
7. Suffering and theodicy: the nature, causes, and purpose of suffering
8. Comfort: including integrity, trust, counsellors, theophany, prosperity, eschatology
9. Job in Christian context
10. Exegesis of selected chapters of Job


Study options

This unit is available to attend for personal development, or can be taken for credit towards a degree at any ACT affiliated college.

The unit is approved for levels 7-9, and so can be taken by those in undergraduate and postgraduate awards of the ACT.

Pre-reading and assessment

Students who enrol for credit are required to complete a pre-reading review assignment. This is optional for audit students, but encouraged! Further assessment consists of an exegetical and a topic essay. Details are provided in the unit guide.

Audit: $520.00.

Credit: $2400 domestic; $2760 overseas
